a mirror?
I have always believed that satire can be the most devastating weapon in the right hands. Sometimes it takes a little bit of satire to hold up a mirror to our actions and to reveal the true situation. We desperately need people who have the ability to shine the torch on the dark places that exist within our modern ‘powers and principalities’.
Terry Jones from Monty Python writes in the Observer as one such person:
Here is an extract:
For some time now I’ve been really pissed off with Mr Johnson, who lives a couple of doors down the street. Well, him and Mr Patel, who runs the health food shop. They both give me queer looks, and I’m sure Mr Johnson is planning something nasty for me, but so far I haven’t been able to discover what. I’ve been round to his place a few times to see what he’s up to, but he’s got everything well hidden. That’s how devious he is.

It’s his torturing and murdering of the chickens at the end of his back yard that is concerning. For years we have heard the screaming of the chickens and seen the bloody carcasses and said “Oh well, there his chickens. He can do what he likes with them.” Now our new neighbour has said it is just not right and he’s correct it isn’t. So that now we have forced to confront the suffering of the chickens are we more morally negligent if we do nothing.

I wonder if we will look to all corners of the neighbourhood for these poor suffering chickens. Perhaps just the ones where they have those valuable oily eggs.
Perhaps if we were so concerned about the suffering chickens.. we would send money for better pens, and perhaps we could send some of that vitamin enriched feed that is found in only some parts of the street. Maybe there is another way that has not been tried yet than simply leaping to killing the owner to relieve the suffering of the chickens.

we’ve been trying that for the past 10 years. we’ve been giving them grain and he’s continued torturing and murdering them.

are you arguing that all options have been exhausted? That the only option is invasion?

if there are other options I’m not aware of them. certainly we have been effective limiting his brutality to inside Iraq but I’m sure you would agree that their lives are equally as valuable as anyone elses. The issue of the oil is, in a way, a red herring. It is almost certainly is a factor in the US decision making process which is wrong. The US may be doing the right thing for all the wrong reasons but that does not mean that it ceases to be the right thing.
