one rule for them…

The media is beginning to focus on the easygoing attitude the Bush Administration has to international law, ie we proclaim it when it suits us. As this writer in the Age today puts it One Rule for them….

I continue to reflect on the power of the Tolkien myth of good and evil (you can use other myths too - star wars, westerns etc). The self-appointed good (Bush, Blair and Howard) continue to kill the evil and faceless orcs (Iraq).

An Australian cartoonist has put it this way…

Oh hear our prayers God…

    Phil,
I’m curious about your phrase. Are you saying that “good and evil” is a myth, or Tolkien’s myth explains good and evil. If the former, I would appreciate further justification for the view that “good” and “evil” are a myth. If the latter, well … I’d still like some further explication.

    Cheers (and God’s peace)

Hi Byran, I dont use myth to determine whether it exists or not but rather as http://www.dictionary.com.

“A traditional, typically ancient story dealing with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes that serves as a fundamental type in the worldview of a people, as by explaining aspects of the natural world or delineating the psychology, customs, or ideals of society: the myth of Eros and Psyche”

Sorry Bryan ran out of room in the comments fields. So, I had to delete a few joining words

    I hope that helps.

Did you update this post? I don’t remember the star wars parenthesis, but I’m running on fewer hours sleep lately.

So do you think there *is* such a thing as good and evil?

I think I understand a little more, but did you post on this earlier and I missed it.

I think what Phil is trying to say is that whilst good and evil exist it is a vast oversimplification to assign pure good and pure evil to real individuals. In a myth such as Star Wars it is possible for an individual to be totally good, or evil for that matter. Real life unfortunately is not a myth and individuals are a mixture and it is dangerous in the situation we are in to attempt to paint either side as totally good or evil.

i think its more the myth that we can decide who is good and evil. which star wars quite elloquently portays over the 12 episodes, the good guys and the bad guys frequently change roles.

Gareth, Really? I don’t remember so many changes of roles over the course of the original star wars. Perhaps you could elaborate.

I still believe in authorial intent, so I’m waiting for Phil to explain it.

Hi Byran, I have re-read my post and can see that I didnt really explain my thought but rather mused what I had been thinking about. Give me a couple of days and I will post up a more complete reflection on the power of the myth of right and wrong, particularly in terms of tolkien.

the “original” starwars being the 12 scripts that george lucas wrote was for twelve movies, in each trilogy the group who came out victorius in the previous trilogy is shown to be corrupt and is tekan over.
