an easter reflection

A week or so ago, I gave a reflection as an introduction to communion at the congregation I lead, haven. It was a reflection that combined some of the things that our guest had been saying about middle eastern culture as well as some of my thoughts on communion. And since that time, and leading to Easter, I have continued to think about this - the paradoxical nature of the celebration of communion.

We honour a time of shame
We celebrate an occasion of grief
A symbol of community, but also of betrayal.
A theology of redemption, based on an injustice.
A clean neat cross as a symbol,
an ugly instrument of torture.
We sanitise the unsanitary.
We share community by not talking.
We celebrate redemption with sombre reflection.

This is cool - I’ve never looked at it this way before. Deeply meaningful. Thanks.

Wow - I’m with Irene on this one; I never thought of it that way. What irony.
