we are one

Forgive me for my geeky behaviour. But all this talk about creeds means that I have to post this from babylon5.

Declaration of Principles — Interstellar Alliance

The Universe speaks in many languages,
but only one voice.
The language is not Narn, or Human, or Centauri, or Gaim or Minbari.
It speaks in the language of hope
It speaks in the language of trust
It speaks in the language of strength and the language of compassion
It is the language of the heart and the language of the soul
But always, it is the same voice
It is the voice of our ancestors, speaking through us,
And the voice of our inheritors, waiting to be born
It is the small, still voice that says:
We are one
No matter the blood
No matter the skin
No matter the world
No matter the star
We are one
No matter the pain
No matter the darkness
No matter the loss
No matter the fear:
We are one.
Here, gathered together in common cause.
We agree to recognize this singular truth and this singular rule:
That we must be kind to one another because each voice enriches us and ennobles us and each voice lost diminishes us
We are the voice of the Universe, the soul of creation, the fire that will light the way to a better future
We are one. We are One.
No matter the pain
No matter the darkness
No matter the loss
No matter the fear
We are one, here, gathered together in common cause.
We agree to recognize this singular truth and this singular rule:

The beauty of the moralistic side of shows like B5 and Startrek are their total absence of religious or quasi-religious ethics. Would but the pundits for organised religion could understand the simple premise that all are one at the end.

It is interesting to compare Bab5 and StarTrek.

It seems that Rodenberry’s vision for the future is that mankind will be at peace and one of the results of that will be a near eradication of religion (and all other world problems). The human heroes are the humanists.

Whereas bab5 vision is somewhat messier - there is still a lower class. Religion still exists and is still very diverse and sometimes at each others throats.

I wonder what is the more realistic vision :)

Gareth, has it occurred to you that perhaps you’re not a Christian?

so caroline what in that babalyon 5 quote don’t you agree with? I mean ignore the context, which is just there to give a framework to express the writers ideas (if its real sci fi), and look at the sentiments and ideas, what in there is at odds with your ideals?

    Caroline,
That’s twice you’ve said that now, and I am confused.

I’m not sure whether to feel:
    a) hurt with Gareth and Phil because you are writing them off;

    b) sad that Naill’s perception the absence of religion is beautiful was confirmed by one of religion’s pundits failing to see we are connected; or

    c) chastised by one whose faith in her own position means she finds it easier to bring the faith of others into question, than bring the questions of others into faith.

Then again if your comment was a ‘men from Mars and women from Venus’ thing - I have obviously completely missed your point.
