Pastoral Visitation

Over at Jordon Cooper’s there is a discussion on the role and future of pastoral visitation. A commenter contributed this in the comments and it struck me as right on the money:

When a pastor’s relationship with the people gets to the point that, when he sees them personally, it’s considered a “visit”, i.e. “out of the ordinary/unusual” then maybe that reveals a weakness in the relationships. Maybe the relationships should be at a place where, when a pastor is with his people, it’s not “official ministry time”, it’s just…life.

I am with you 100%, it has been my experience as a pastor that if you are visiting as a lifestyle then the relationship is just part of life.
