Maundy Thursday
Jordon did a survey and listed some of his favorite blogs. I checked them out and one of them had a post that interested me. We often have questions at Northern on why Maundy Thursday is so named. Now I can answer with some authority and convinction ![]()
BBC online has a nice short explanation of Maundy Thursday:
The feast of Maundy or Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and established the ceremony known as the Eucharist.
During the Last Supper Jesus holds a traditional Passover meal with his disciples.
But he gives the meal a new meaning when he takes a loaf of bread and a cup of wine to represent his body and blood, aware of his impending death on the cross, and so creates the ritual of the Holy Eucharist.
The night of Maundy Thursday is the night on which Jesus was betrayed by Judas in the Garden of Gethsemane.
The name Maundy originates from the old Latin name for the day - ‘Dies Mandatum,’ which means the day of the new commandment - the commandment (or mandate, which comes from the same Latin root) by Jesus Christ to his disciples, to love one another as he had loved his disciples.
In the Roman Catholic Church, Maundy Thursday is a general communion day - a single Mass is sung in the evening, and a Host, consecrated for the following day, is placed in a specially adorned chapel of repose.

Our parish does the Maundy Thursday vigil overnight in the chapel where we place the consecrated elements on the altar of repose. The elements are used the next day (Good Friday) and completely consumed so that until the Easter Vigil there is no reserved sacrament. So it isn’t only RCs who do the vigil and altar of repose — Episocopalians do it too!

It is not a new commandment afterall what did Jesus say were the most important commandments:
Love the Lord god with all your heart,
Love your neighbour as yourself.
