Stories of involvement in nccc - Sarah

1. It was good of you to volunteer to co-ordinate our second Food Bank on a Tuesday. Why did you decide to do this?

I just think that since last Christmas, I have seen such a happy change in the life of George and me and from our experience we think the church is doing a great job and I would like to pass on the care from the church from the God to more people, to let more people share the love and make more people happy. So I volunteered to do some good.

2. You also help co-ordinate the Op Shop and attend Connect when you can. How has your involvement of the church benefited you?

During my short life I’ve got quite a lot of set backs, a lot of unfortunate experiences and I had been quite depressed and just before I came to the Christmas Dinner I was so depressed that I did a u turn in the 110 km and went against the traffic not knowing what I was doing when other people were flashing their high beams on me. I was really so depressed but my focus was always on me, my family and how am I going to help them, I just feel exhausted and when I came with George, George introduced me to come to the Christmas Dinner, and the people were so friendly here and through the involvement I beat my depression. I feel just thinking of yourself is very selfish and in the world there are so many people worse than me so I think the main issue is the goodness of being involved in the activities here, is to make me feel like I’m not the world, there are so many people around who need help who are worse than me. I think I’m much happier.

3. You are new to us, what do you think of Christianity?

In the past, I was brought up in China, where religion was not free and we were all taught to believe one thing and I was curious, how can people go on Sundays every week to pray, singing even with not so nice voice still sing and I just thought how can they do the same thing repeatedly so many years of their life and never get bored and what sort of people are they, what their nature is this kind of religion. I was too exhausted in my little life I didn’t have time or energy to go into it, through this one year, through the ministers through the church people especially Nola, I thank you very much, through the good people who are doing the good deeds, through the reading of the bible I start to know a lot of Christianity, the care the love and equality of people poor or rich we all help each other, that’s just the start, I haven’t got a great knowledge of Christianity yet I’m making the efforts to know more but the good people, the principle of care and love and be a good person has really attracted me and gave me motivation to be part of it just like spreading pollen to other people. You are good people and that’s my impression and it’s a worthy cause
