Deb Hirsch - the three B’s
Deb Hirsch is talking about the “three b’s”. She is talking about Belonging, Belief and Behavior. Her central thesis is that our Churches primarily focuses on the last two - belief and behavior.
I can understand her point - yet, I can’t help but believe that our critique of Church’s focus on belonging will be influenced by our experience of Church. For some people, I imagine that ‘belonging’ is a powerful way for them to connect and be held by a church.
This concept of the three B’s obviously has consequences to how we understand mission, and reminds me of the open-set, closed set discussion we have had on signposts in the past. I suspect that Deb may touch on this later - so, perhaps more details later.
Update: Nigel just pointed out to me that the three B’s - belonging, belief and behavior, are similar to nccc three core values of community, spirituality and compasson. While Deb talked about behavior as moral behavior, we tend to focus on our behavior as serving other people.

i heard deb at the conference. correct me if i am wrong or misguided. i heard her say that each generation has subsequently thrown off the “guiding principle” of that culture for its antithesis. e.g. our grandparents were guided by the principle of “behaviour” which their children threw off for the principle of “belief” which was thrown off by subsequent generation for “belonging” which is the present culture’s “guiding principle.” My question is: what do we suspect will be the “guiding principle” of the next generation? How will this change the face of the emerging church? is there a possibility of “looping back” to behaviour/ belief/ belonging contiuum?

I have heard deb do this before, and the same question always arises for me. Does this mean that we are going to go back to being all about behaviour, or will a new paradigm emerge?
