Western Australia

I really enjoyed my trip to Western Australia.

It was great to be able to ‘see’ the backyards that Hamo is a missionary to. Well, maybe I didn’t see many backyards but I did have a good couple of walks around the Brighton estate. Hamo and Danelle were wonderful hosts and even cooked me the Alan Hirsch special curry that I am sure is still going through my system – very yummy! It was also great to meet Ali, Sam and Winston (the dog).

On Tuesday, I ran a seminar for church leaders and ministers and told the story of Northern Community and our journey in creating a multi-congregational church.

At the start of the seminar I made some disclaimers. They included the fact that I wasn’t an academic or a change management expert but a local church minister who wanted to share his struggles and successes. I also shared the disclaimer that I was a one-eyed Collingwood supporter, which I can tell you took some courage considering that Collingwood (bottom of the ladder) had beaten West Coast (top of the ladder) the week before. But, I escaped back to Vic alive so no harm done.

You know it was so energising to be with a group of people who were eager to re-invent/adapt/lead their churches in a way that was missional. What I mean by this, is that the focus was on how to connect with Australians who do not make up the holy huddle.

So, much energy and talk goes into what is happening for people who are already inside the Church – it was inspiring to be a part of a discussion about something different.

The next day I also had lunch with Malcolm Rule and his team at Encounter Church of Christ. It was great to hear some of their story and journey in change and re-creation.

Is it just me or is there an increasing amount of stories of re-missionaliisation occurring around the place?
