forge national summit
I was going to write up some stuff on the Forge national summit. A summary of my busy weekend but I think Duncan has posted a good summary over here. By the way, it was great to put a face to the name Duncan, ableit briefly.
But some great quotes I heard around the summit:
“healthy things are self-organising” - Olivia McLean
“My fear for the emerging church is that it defines itself by what it isn’t” - Kim Hammond
“Community and Mission cannot be seperated” - Kim Hammond
“We are learning community development from scripture” - Geoff Westlake
“There is only a few things that you need to know about following Jesus - the rest is on a need to know basis” Geoff Westlake quoting his wife
“We are not going to run programs that meet all of your needs” - Oliva McLean
“How can we cheer on what is happening in the community” - Geoff Westlake
“Young Families are more stressed time wise than other age groups” - Kim Hammond

That’s a great thought, and I think probably a good measure to use for a healthy adult, or at least mature, “thing”. But what about a newborn? What about an embryo? Do we expect these things to be self-organising? I guess as I thought about Liv’s quote, Steve Taylor’s thoughts in The Out Of Bounds Church about our role being that of a midwife amidst emerging culture echoed in my mind as a sort of counter-balance - or perhaps just the other side of the same coin - to the idea of health being evident through self-organisation. I suspect that our goal may be self organisation, or to see that as evidence of a healthy and growing community… but during its early stages, too? I dunno, what do you think?
