Forge post card event

Let me recommend anyone that is in the Melbourne, Australia area to book this in their diary. This is a post-card that will be worth getting to (not that the other ones aren’t!).

Come on people!! All the threads on Homosexuality and inerrancy get hundreds of comments.
This topic is huge,
How do we disciple people in this consumer culture world.
We all have to face the issues of what we embrace of our culture and what we confront.
Socialization in light of the gospel is a massive issue, surely The Rev, Lance, Homer or Bec must have a comment. Look forward to hearing meaningful comments from you all
(i am trying to get soem comments here!!!)
Danni, phil help?

Good luck Kim. The flyer itself is not much of a conversation starter - but perhaps if you want to drop some interesting quotes, thoughts or even an account of the event to us, we could get some chatter going.

Any thoughts on socialization and the gospel? Do we socialize people into the gospel or more specificly the church and what do we call them out from,
those kinds of things!!!

I am struggling with your terms a little, so you might need to explain those a little bit kim. I don’t know if this is what you are talking about, but I think our churches are really focussed on socialising people into churchianity.
I was reflecting last night on some of my (long ago) experiences of youth ministry. We often spend a lot of time socialising young people into becoming well behaved (no smoking, no drinking, no sex, no hard metal music, no rude jokes, no cynicism, no doubt etc) so that when you are in schools the christians (much as I was) are considered to be the saccharine version of christianity portrayed in movies such as saved.
And in doing so, we teach that being christian is about distancing yourself socially from the people who are edgy, struggling, imperfect and doing all of that stuff. What a message to send to fractured young people.

Mick Duncan says you can only trust God for two things in this life, that he will always love you, and that you will spend eternity with him in heaven. You can trust God for nothing else.
Not health, not wealth, not comfort, not even success in ministry, clear guidance, or the safety of your own children.
Just God loves me, and I am going to heaven
and thats enough!

I would have to agree Rev.
One verse that has always challenged / spoken to me is “though He slay me, still I will praise Him.”
And to be really vulnerable here - the thought of truly being “slain” such as what I see our persecuted brothers going through around the world - scares me silly. Not so much for me, but for my kids.
Could I truly still praise God if I lost them?
God loves me, and I am going to heaven - that’s my only certainty in life isn’t it?

Your right Danni
Socialization happens all the time and so we pull people out of the world and they are not transformed but rather christianized into our church culture,
We talk about this at the junction
We used a quote from your blog
The church is not simply a gathering of well-meaning individuals who have entered into a social contract to meet their
privately defined self -interests. It is, instead, an intentional and disciplined community witnessing to the power and
presence of God’s reign.
Missional Church, Darrell L. Guder (ed.) Eerdmans 1998
We have a coommunity that meets at a pub in Belgrave on a sunday night, if this was all they did to explore their faith, I mean the ones who call themselves follows of Jesus
then I feel they are meeting their privately defined self -interests. But if they, in the midts of that pub, committ to each other, grow and challenge each other, be intentional and disciplined in their listeningl learning and growing
then I think it is diffrent

Mick spoke last night to a group of friends at my house over dinner. I would in the most strong language possible encourage you to come along tonight. This man tells the truth in a way that only someone who has suffered long, and come out the other side, can. He is a personal hero of mine.

I don’t think it is that easy to get into heaven. Believing is not enough…yes believing wins us His favour but we still have to live as if we believe….and lastly it is by God’s grace alone that we get a crack at heaven b/c on our own we are unworthy. God still has the sovreign right to refuse us entry just because He is God….not an unjust God. Who knows what He will tell us when we meet face to face. We could think we are doing everything right but He may say well, what about this or how about when you did this??? I doubt even as Christians that our lists would be short! I believe that each one of us will walk away from that moment knowing that we got just what we deserved, even if we don’t get into heaven. But there is no guarantee of getting into heaven. There is the guarantee that He loves us and that’s just about it.
Also, we ought to be living as if we are in heaven already in order to have a true chance of getting into heaven. Jesus was living and ministering to us with the idea that He was recreating His Kingdom here on Earth.

Martin Luther upset the Catholic church apple cart all those years ago by affirming salvation by grace alone through faith…. not by works so no one may boast. No one but Christ will be in heaven because this is what they deserve.

Frances,
just what is the helmet of salvation? Why did Paul say believe and be baptised and you will be saved you and your whole family? Why did Jesus say, “and whosoever beliefs in me will have everlasting life”?
I agree that the kingdom of God is what we are to bring to the earth, but Romans tells us the nothing can seperate us from the love of Christ, nothing. We should live rightly because we love God, and want to establish the kingdom, not because we are scared of going to hell.
