Mark for Lent

A little while ago at our Tangent congregation, we did some planning and goal setting for ways that we think that we could improve our observance of our core values and our spiritual practices both as individuals and as a congregation.  One of the items on my list was to improve my spiritual preparation for Holy days such as Christmas and Easter.  We don’t have a strong Lenten tradition in our denomination and our preparation for Easter has traditionally been through the hymns and praise of our traditional worship services moving on to the next chapter of the churches of christ hymn book.

So, this year as a personal commitment, I am going to be reading through the gospel of Mark during Lent.  This will involve a short reading each day, some reflection and prayer.  I chose Mark because our Blended and Tangent congregations have worked through a five week series on Mark earlier this year and so we are already familiar with Mark’s voice and audience.  Plus the whole gospel of Mark is such a march towards the Passion that it seems appropriate.

Anyway, I have invited some of our Tangent congregation members to join me in this Lenten observance if they wish, and any signposts readers are welcome to do the same.  Each day I hope to post up the next passage of Mark.  All posts will be in the Contemporary English Version (CEV) for the simple reason that I use that version for my non-academic bible reading.  I may or may not post up some of my reflections or links to secondary materials.  Anyone is invited to participate in discussion of the passage in the comments.  I will post the passages in extended entries so that they don’t dominate the space on the front page.  All posts will go into a dedicated cateogry called “Mark for Lent 2006″.

If you are interested, but prefer to participate by email, then let me know as there will be an email version of this going out as well subject to interest.
