missio Dei

Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch –

Mission (is) not merely an activity of the church. It is the very heartbeat work of God. It is in the very being of God that the basis for the missionary enterprise is found.  God is a sending God, with a desire to see humankind and creation reconciled, redeemed, and healed. The missional church, then is a sent church. It is a going church, a movement of God through his people, sent to bring healing to a broken world. (Shaping Things to Come p.18)

David Bosch –

Mission (is) understood as being derived from the very nature of God. It (is) thus put in the context of the doctrine of the Trinity, not of the ecclesiology or soteriology. The classical doctrine of the missio Dei as God the Father sending the Son, and God the Father and the Son sending the Spirit (is) expanded to include yet another “movement”: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit sending the church into the world…(Transforming Mission p.390)

Daryl Guder –

The missio Dei is historical and concrete. God’s Holy Spirit has begun the implementation of the missio Dei in the calling and formation of a particular people: Israel, and from Pentecost onward, the ever-widening the church…(Missional Church p.4)

Has the missio Dei fizzled out? Don’t see much of it in Melbourne. Suggestion: start a campaign with the slogan “Where the bloody hell are you”.
