Mark for Lent 24
A short passage today, containing teaching about divorce
Teaching about Divorce (Matthew 19.1-12; Luke 16.18)
1After Jesus left, he went to Judea and then on to the other side of the Jordan River. Once again large crowds came to him, and as usual, he taught them.
2Some Pharisees wanted to test Jesus. So they came up to him and asked if it was right for a man to divorce his wife. 3Jesus asked them, “What does the Law of Moses say about that?”
4They answered, “Moses allows a man to write out divorce papers and send his wife away.”
5Jesus replied, “Moses gave you this law because you are so heartless. 6But in the beginning God made a man and a woman.

Jesus went on to liken divorce to adultery. What is the point of marriages where the partners realise they’ve made a mistake? Why would Jesus want people in that situation to stay together, or did he mean something entirely different? Did he only refer to marriages that were the “will of God”?

If Jesus does go on to liken divorce to adultery, I’ll discuss it when we get to it.
(Tell the people in the cheep seats to stop trying to ruin the plot before we get there.)
There something funny in Jesus having to ask them what the ‘law of Moses’ says? I thought so.

This entry seemed to be incomplete. Hence the adultery comment.

Yes it has been one of our shortest readings.
For those marking Jesus on how often he talks about sexual realtionships compared to ecconomic relationships he needed to give them at least something to put in the sex collumn.
