Tanya did a good job on the Enough Rope interview which was aired tonight.
July 30th, 2007 at 11:34 pm
She did indeed. Denton did not go easy on her. I appreciated his balanced, fair approach. I also appreciated Tanya saying what has long been needed to be said.

I thought it was a superb interview.
It looked like it was pre-recorded without an audience…because at times when you’d expect an audience to chuckle there was silence…which I’ve noticed in a few other interviews for Enough Rope.
Denton’s ‘open offer’ for the Houstons to come on the program was interesting.
He’s obviously keen to delve deeper.
A particular highlight for me was when Tanya contrasted Hill$ong with the humility of the Salvo’s.
That’s a big issue I find that goes unaddressed in the whole ‘contemporary’ church scene…the sheer cocky arrogance.
I also thought it was well-stated too about the whole ‘for us or against us’ thing….and the reality of the ‘walking wounded’.
Will Hill$ong now ignore or attack….that is the question.

For those Signposters outside of Australia…or who missed the program…the video of Tanya’s interview is now available at

Thanks Lance - appreciate the link.

Has Tanya lost faith in Christ altogether - I got that impression from the interview. I wonder how much was edited for time constraints?
July 31st, 2007 at 8:35 am
Lance,
Hillsong will ignore, discredit and deny….the usual stuff.
July 31st, 2007 at 8:56 am
Tanya,
You spoke clearly and with dignity. Well done.

this cartoon from The Ongoing Adventures of ASBO Jesus I think says a thousand words about Hill$ong.

Tanya is on 702am in Sydney right now

Hey Neil, do you know if the ABC will put the interview in the archives at their website?
July 31st, 2007 at 1:06 pm
Hi turtleneck,
I’ve already answered this question on signposts, but in summary, I am currently in ministry and don’t wish to confuse some young Christians who are looking to me for leadership, and would not understand my reasons for making such a stand, even if I explained it to them.
July 31st, 2007 at 1:43 pm
emblazoned,
with respect…”kids” can often understand more than “adults” give them credit for. There are probably 14 and 15 year olds out there who are asking exactly the same questions of you. “Leadership” requires honesty, authenticity and integrity.
July 31st, 2007 at 1:55 pm
I hear what you are saying Bec, but i think my page is full of examples of people much older than 14 and 15 year old who cannot comprehend the arguments I am presenting.
If possible, I’d rather avoid the fallout of having to explain it all for months at my church until people finally understood what I was saying.
A good number of the ‘congregation’ are pro-Hillsong (but also, a good number very Hillsong skeptical. Probably a 50/50 split), and without the explicit support of my Senior Pastor, I feel at this stage it would create more inter-church tensions than it is worth.
I’d rather deal with the direct cause for now…and try to get a response from the Hillsong leadership.
July 31st, 2007 at 1:59 pm
Does your Senior Pastor know about the project?

Hey Neil, do you know if the ABC will put the interview in the archives at their website?
No Idea. It was with Virginia Trioli about 10:20am. They streamed it live but i don’t know whether it will be available a s a podcast.
Seems Tanya is doing the rounds anyway….Hill$ong will be furious…hehehehe
July 31st, 2007 at 2:25 pm
Yes, I suspect so.
Do you think that Hillsong will try to ignore the book and hope that the storm passes over, or do you think that they will try to respond to the claims made by Tanya?
July 31st, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Ignore will be the first tactic.
If it goes away they will make snide comments in sermons about dark forces and discredit nameless people as having vendettas and working for the enemy.
If it gains momentum and more coverage (Especially tabloid television - same target audience), they will be forced to defend and even rewrite history. They will present Tanya as being unstable etc.
They will then push out more press releases about Hill$ong helping the community. These will show one hit wonder blitz’s for the specific purpose of providing an opposite distraction.
People will start to think, “Well sure they have done some bad things but hey look at all this “good” they do.”
Life will go on.
Hopefully something will change.
It is a bit much to expect one book though to bring the castle down unfortunately.
July 31st, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Ahh yes, but if the termites have infested the castle as much as is purported, perhaps it is possible to chip away brick by brick?
July 31st, 2007 at 3:17 pm
Interesting mixed metaphors.
I think certain weaknesses in human nature holds much of Hillsong together.
To answer your question, no my senior pastor doesn’t know about my little project, but I explain that in more detail above in my answer to fabio.
July 31st, 2007 at 7:29 pm
Well Neil, it looks like Tanya’s criticism of Hillsong has made it on to tabloid television, being the lead story on tonight’s A Current Affair. The article also looked at the Exclusive Brethren and Scientology. Brian Houston will love being in that company.
July 31st, 2007 at 7:55 pm
And for the ‘too much Tanya is never enough’ brigade…here’s her 2UE interview from this morning.

Video of A Current Affair story on Hill$ong is on their webpage.

It’s hard work keeping up with all this.
July 31st, 2007 at 9:25 pm
The 2UE one is a good one.
July 31st, 2007 at 9:28 pm
I notice in the ACA one, Brian’s comment is, we can’t stop people saying what they want when they leave our church. We will just keep trying to help people….”
Blah blah blah….
I should work in PR…oh that’s right I do.

Re changes in my site:
No one’s pressuring me…I just think my articles aren’t strong enough for me to continue and I really need support of well written testimonies and cases.
July 31st, 2007 at 10:11 pm
It is my hope that the book and ensuing media attention will give some individuals the courage to step out of the shadows, gain a voice and find healing.
I hope the more serious issues raised, particularly in the Denton interview, do not get lost in the shuffle of ‘what is pentecost like, etc etc’ which is in and of itself kind of hype.
It is in Christ’s hands now. He knows what has been dealt with justly. He also knows what to bring to the light. He knows where there has been a calculated lack of integrity, mercy, humility or justice. May Christ deal with all the mess in His eternal wisdom, love and mercy.
