Dear Senators,
We believe in the rights of all children. We call on you to reject the proposed new changes to Australia’s refugee laws, and to ensure no child who comes to Australia seeking asylum is put into detention.
Greens Senator Bob Brown: “I have no doubt that this 32,000 strong GetUp petition would be 300,000, or more likely 3 million, if all the Australians who agree with it just had the opportunity to put their name to it.”
Liberal MP Judy Moylan: “I’m just pleased that people are prepared to let their views be known in this place and it is clear that we do have a healthy democracy in Australia.”
Labor Shadow Minister for Immigration, Tony Burke: “Everyone who has signed the GetUp petition wants [principles] to matter still. And with a principle of decency there is only one way this legislation can go and that is for it to be defeated.”
