I like Allan Hirsch definition of what church is.

A group of people commited to community based around Jesus, participating in worship, discipleship and mission.

Yes, that’s a good definition, whether that group of people are inside a building/dwelling/house, or outside a building/dwelling/house makes no difference.

Jesus said it wasn’t about a “place” …

    John 4:20-24 (New International Version)

20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

21 Jesus declared, “Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.

23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.

24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”

Yeah I like it for that reason, it can look like anything, and meet anyplace, all that is needed is people committed to Jesus and each other, going about kingdom business.

but Rev, you said Urban Seed wasn’t a church!! ;P

    the rev Says:

No I said they don’t call themselves a church.

And unless I am mistaken many of them go to other churches and consider these other places their church.

    bec Says:

mmm…I think that less than half go to other churches, but I’m not sure, I hadn’t really thought about it. I think almost everyone would consider themselves to be involved in more than one community of faith, more than one church.

Like anything, it would depend on who you talked to I think, and you’d have to unpack definitions etc.

Oygle #272 - Great Post. Never considered that - no need to worship in a ‘particular place’.

As a person who is disallusioned with the church because of abuse, it is so liberating to know that one is not required to attend church to go to heaven. So many people say to me what is wrong why are you not going to church. It is as if i have committed some heinous crime and have turned my back on God. Nothing could be further from the truth. Australian culture has bread within us that we must attend and we must pay our dues towards the church. It is easy to see why the churches promote this kind of culture. I attended a church out at Rouse Hill run by the Salvos and enjoyed myself immensly but felt no pressure to attend continually anymore. It was annoying to note that they were singing HS music but I can forgive them for that downfall.

Unlike the ‘hey look at me’ shallow glitz of Hill$ong, I was fortunate tonight to stumble across this conference which is happening right now called ‘Agents of Change - NCYC 2007′.

    http://agentsofchange.org.au/

It looks for the most part to be without the fluff of a penty wankfest..and actually tackles some serious meaty issues.

    http://agentsofchange.org.au/images/stories/Downloads/elective.pdf

Perth seems to be the most unlikeliest of locations for something organised by Christians that goes beyond the superficial, so I’d be interested to hear any cub reports, even if they’re 3rd or 4th hand reports… from the conference.

My only concern is this ..

    “Public Rally!
Come! To the NCYC Public Rally!

    8pm Saturday the 6th Jan!
    Suggested Donation: $10

The Public Rally is at Scotch College Primary. This is off Stirling Road in Swanbourne. You should be able to see the stage, Just follow the signs.”

Smells suspiciously like Planetshakers/Youth Alive wank.

It’s Uniting Church from what I understand. I was going to be there to see a friend’s band play but Qantas is all booked up. Lots of old friends will be there…very bummed I can’t make it.

Fly the friendly skies of United Bob. think of it as an adventure.

  13. 283
    silentbob Says:

    as in United Airlines?

Well, Sydney to Perth, via Auckland as it is operated by Air New Zealand on United’s behalf will cost me $4,716.00 according to the United website, as opposed to the $1,000 return trip from Qantas.

    jewel Says:

Firstly I’ll declare my bias, I am Uniting Church preachers kid and half of my family work for the Uniting Church. However I haven’t attended a Uniting Church for over 10 years.

Every two years a different presbytery in the Uniting Church runs a national conference called NCYC (National Christian Youth Convention). As far as I know it’s been around long before Youth Alive and Planet Shakers.

Despite its faults, there is a genuine attempt within the Uniting Church to examine issues such as poverty, justice and our social responsibility as Christians. They are also willing to explore alt. Worship and alt forms of church. Like all major denominations it often depends on what congregation you belong to.

Could the “Rally” be a wank? quite possibly if they try and do the mega church thing. However, my experience tells me that they generally try and push the envelope and do things differently. I attended NCYC in Newcastle and the worship space was in a car park as it was the only place big enough – it was very different to anything I have attended before. Some of it was a bit naff but they were really trying to explore alternative forms of worship.

And thankfully I doubt if you will get any preaching on tithing!

For all it’s faults I do admire then for being willing to raise issues and ask questions noone else is. I also would love to hear from attendees.

  15. 285
    Lance Says:

Well, the occasional drift into a wanky penty-style rally doesn’t really worry me, if the core of the thing is OK, which it seems NCYC is.

I was quite struck by how in-depth and non-superficial the whole conference program was, and I may have even attended it..with a bit of pre-warning.

I suppose I’m just wary of wank creeping into solid churches, because Churchlands Christian Fellowship was a Uniting Church before it was hijacked by the wankers…and is now unrecognisable from the healthyish church it once was.

  16. 286
    Janet Says:

The Uniting Church has a history of being brave in tackling sensitive issues before any other Australian denominations do… all power to them. I’ve never attended a NCYC but I’ve heard some good things about them.

    Greg the explorer Says:

Hey Jewel I was at the NCYC in Newcastle and the Car Park Cathedral was simply amazing. I was ther as part of a contingent from the National Anglican Youth Gathering that was being held at Morpeth at the same time. we spent the day with you guys and it was breath-taking - hey maybe we sat near each other and never knew it - I was the really7 amazing old bald fat bloke

  18. 288
    jewel Says:

I remember your contingent…sorry to say I can’t remember you, but it was a while back. I was one of the production/stage managers, the concept wasn’t mine but I helped make it happen. It was a fun gig. The hardest part was getting the power to the site and lighting it properly.

I remember some controversy about you guys attending, something about the Sydney diocese not happy about their guys getting involved with us heathens! Any truth?

  19. 289
    Greg the explorer Says:

none that leaked out to the masses! There may have been, I’m not sure how it ened up becuase every one who was at NAYG came to NCYC. I really loved the day - I spent some time at a stand up comedy session and despite rev’s suggestion that my jokes are lame…I killed it. Especcialy with this joke - Hi my names Greg and I’m starting a new branch of the church called CCC - Constipated Christians for Christ - our theme song will be Bind us together Lord

Laugh? They thought their pants would never dry!

    I know… old joke.

  23. 293
    Greg the explorer Says:

LOL - all my jokes are free for the rest of the world to use and enjoy - so far the requestrs have come in…well let’s say my origianl printing of 5 copies is still available. Laxative innuendos…ROTFLMAO…whish I’d thought of that!

A man died and approached the Pearly gates.

St Peter appeared and asked the man “so you want to come inside the gates and enter Heaven, do you”.

    The man replied “Yes sir.”

St Peter, (obviously a Catholic) asked the man “so what have you done anything in your life time that merits entry beyond these walls?”

The man replied “I once came across a woman being being assaulted by a group of Hells Angels. I stopped my car, jumped out, grabbed the two bikes holding her, knocked their heads together until they released the woman. The I took on the Leader of the group and punched him in the nose”.

St Peter replied “That’s very impressive. But I can’t seem to find that recorded in your book of good deeds. When did this occur?”.

The man replied “About two minutes ago”.
