Census 2006
I love filling out forms so I filled out our census details tonight. Next to the question where it said “What goods or services does your employer produce?” I wrote “legal services” for my own information and then I hesitated over Phil’s details. I was so tempted to write “church services”.

I didn’t have sex last night, so was I right to check no?
August 9th, 2006 at 1:49 pm

I didn’t have sex that night I had four in the house.
August 9th, 2006 at 4:56 pm
Four in the house is worth 2 in the bushes
August 9th, 2006 at 5:05 pm
Sex on the night… now that would have made for a very interesting census question.
How did we get onto that again????

It’s all hill$ongs fault Janet -them and Phil Pringle.
I wonder if you beat the crap out of Phil Pringle and kept on doing it for days and weeks and months on end if it would be a defense to argue that seeing as though it was Phil Pringle: “Once you pop you just can’t stop!”

Ok Greg, now I’m totally confused (which doesn’t take much, admittedly) Is it Hill$ong et al’s fault if you have sex on the night or if you don’t? And if you don’t, is that because you now have to give them a tithe on your sex life as well? (maybe that’s not silly, considering the demands they place on their victim/workers’ private lives?) and, also, there was no box on my census form for hitting PP (besides, i have no desire to get within arm’s length of any of these guys ..)

Abtruth,
I love George Pell. I love him with the love of the Lord. But I think he’s an utter wanker.

“I love George Pell. I love him with the love of the Lord. But I think he’s an utter wanker.”
Refreshing to hear a Catholic actually say it.
August 10th, 2006 at 12:36 pm
BP - its all hillsongs fault… everything, interest rate rise, unemployment, iraq, lebanon, 9/11, my ingrown toenail…. everything.
Luke - i really don’t know him at all apart from one program on the abc where he spoke out about the reality of Christ which was good… (even Brian Houston can have a good day - - - nahhh take that back ab) so im interested as to why he is a total self abuser..?
August 10th, 2006 at 2:00 pm
I think this all confirms that we are all writing non-census
August 10th, 2006 at 4:48 pm
Thanks Lance. Actually, I woul estimate that most Catholic people have a healthy disrespect for their Archbishops. Certainly Pell is not held in the greatest esteem and affection by his flock, no doubt about that.
Abtruth, these links might give you a clue why….

And then, of course, there’s his support of this sort of thing….

But God loves him, and so do the rest of us. We try, anyway. We love him, but we don’t like him.

half of those links i was thinking ‘yeah well different point of view he can express etc’ but then his comments on child abuse!!! what the hell was he thinking…

(thanks Phil for sorting out my login)
I am a census collector and statistics enthusiast. I have the stats on what Aussie residents put last census for Religion.
Catholic 26.7%, Anglican 20.7%, Uniting 6.7% (actual attendance rates are respectively about 15%, 5% & 10% of these).
Presby/Reformed 3.4%, Orthodox 2.82%, Baptist 1.65%, Pentecostal 1.04%.
Small figures for various other denoms. Other Christian 1.52% (includes ‘Christian’)
Total Christian 68% (64.1% in SA), despite weekly church attendance of only 9%.
Buddhism 1.91%, Hinuis 0.51%, Islam 1.5%
No Religion 15.48% (20.6% in SA)
Inadequately described 1.88%, Not Stated 9.8%. ‘Jedi Knight’ I imagine would fall into one of these categories.
The reason the figures down to Baptist were so high is because they had their own box. If there wasn’t a box for them, some Bappos would have written Christian instead. Likewise if there was a box for Pentecostal, more than 1.04% would have ticked it. The irony is that the boxes listed were there on the basis of their high numbers from last time, so AOG/Pente didn’t get a box this time either.
Likewise, CoC came in at 0.33%, but would have got more if they had their own box.

There is an interesting article in today’s The Weekend Australian about the Anglican church in Melbourne and the troubles they are having electing a new archbishop. The church appears to be evenly divided into factions.
The article even draws a link between the evangelical Anglicans and Hillsong. It’s online here.

I don’t think Hillsong and Melbourne Evangelical Anglicans are particularly close in outlook, although the MEA’s might sing a few HS songs in their services. I think however they’d usually preach some solid biblical teaching from a scholarly evangelical perspective… rather than the bizarre “pluck a verse from somewhere and make it mean almost anything” approach of BH. (well, I’ve only heard BH preach a couple of times on the tele so that may be unfair… but that’s how it came across on both those occasions.)

You mean the guy who used the rich young ruler to explain how God wants you to have a lot of money is sometimes not following proper exegesis of scripture?
amazing!!!

So it really is a pattern.
I really hate that style of preaching.

Rev states “You mean the guy who used the rich young ruler to explain how God wants you to have a lot of money is sometimes not following proper exegesis of scripture?”
No probably just using “Apostolic Hermenutics!”
August 12th, 2006 at 10:05 pm
Lionfish - don’t you mean BH - Bullcrap Hermenutics.

I reckon there’s a whole cow shed of it - the tithing issue is only a sneaky fart compared to rest of the stuff that’s gotta come out.
