question

I am going to be at an event later this week with a rather fantastic High Court judge which is a pretty small event with a large chance of making personal contact.  Is it uncouth to ask for an autograph?  I mean, he is not a wildlife hunter or a rockstar or something.  He is like a brilliant jurist.  Is this uncool?

It’s only cool if he autographs a gavel. Even then, it’s not really all that cool.

of course it’s not cool - but that’s not the point is it? You respect and admire this person obviously quite a lot so your desire goes beyond ‘cool’. Your request may be the lift to this persons day that they need and it would be something you would like if they agree - so do it…but get a gavel or a judgment or a book he wrote for him to sign or at the very least a leather bound journal (you could pick one up from a good book store…I’ve seen them in the one that also has gloria jeans attached to them.) and get him to write a favourite peice of poetry or a favourite quote along with his autograph.

In short - it isn’t cool - but your doing it despite it not being cool?…that would make it cool!

    In short

(AKA tbokar) If he had been lying about traffic violations (for example) then that would definitely be uncool.

Actually it was a lot of fun. But in the end he was mobbed a bit so I didn’t ask for an autograph.
