Pastor Sir Doug Nichols

In our ministry centre at Northern Community, we have a chapel that is named the “Pastor Sir Doug Nichols chapel. It is after Sir Doug who came to faith in one of the churches that merged to form Northern Community. He has a significant impact on the northern suburbs.

Douglas Nicholls became a champion sprinter, winning the Nyah and Warracknabeal gifts, a famed boxer in Jimmy Sharman’s tent at the Royal Easter Show and a stunning footballer with Fitzroy in Melbourne.

Then he became a pastor and an activist, campaigning for Aboriginal citizenship and land rights. He was the first Aborigine to be knighted and became governor of South Australia. He died in 1988.”
