The term we like to use in place of disciple is "apprentice" (ala Dallas Willard). For us its just a bit clearer... an apprentice seeks to imitate the master. Many of us have spent a lot of time learning all sorts of things about Jesus. Trying to actually put them into practice is a whole other thing... I agree - the active component is critical.
