greenman on church stats

The greenman posted a while ago on some interesting church stats:

“At 89% attendance the Nigerians truely are a church going nation, they have a church attendance more than double that of the USA (you heathen lot). As for Australia we only made it to 16%, which from The Green Mans anecdotal experience is fairly generous. This means that 84 percent of Australians don’t attend church, which in a strange example of synergy, is also the average age of church attendees in Australia.”

I would agree with greeman’s comments that 16% seems fairly generous.

If the measure, as claimed, is people who go “REGULARLY TO WEEKLY RELIGIOUS SERVICES” I too would think it was overstating the attendance.

But if the question asked was “Did you attend a religious service in the past month” then I can beleive it. Think of all the people that would turn up for a baptism/first communion/wedding/funeral.

Even if they asked “Did you attend a religious service excluding a funeral, in the past month” people will be more inclined to give the answer they think is the “right” answer. So in the US in most circles the “right” answer would be “yes” since there most people think that this equates with “propper” thing to do. I wonder how much that would be a factor in Australia?

Yes, the monthly figures are significantly higher than the weekly ones. Weekly ch attendance in Aust is about 8%. I’d want to look closer into the Nigerian figures - 89% seems a bit high for such a large country.
