Hillsong - A Case For Change

There has been much talk, in the threads about documenting a “Case For Change” for Hillsong.

And very soon, Tanya Levin’s new book “Glass Houses” will hit both the boookstores, and the words contained within will be discussed and debated across the Blogosphere.

Recently, the Bulletin published a positive article on Hillsong, and to be more specific, the closing sermon:

“Skinner addressed the crowd with a blunt message: “You can’t separate God in his awesome power in heaven from the snotty, bloated kid with the fly in his eye in the ditch. God is not impressed by the size of our church. God is not impressed by how many times we go to church but by how much we become like Jesus. The world is on an accumulation binge - give me more and more and more - but God is a giver.”

We have all discussed the ‘what needs to change’ - but I am now left thinking.

1) Is real Change possible within Hillsong and other contemporary Churches?

2) What will be the real driver for change in the Contemporary Church (that includes Hillsong) - Critique or the Gospel?

3) Is reconcilliation without compromise really possible between the Contemporary Church and those overwhelmingly disenfranchised by it?

“For those interested, Critiquing Hillsong is in stasis because a Hillsong pastor has offered to talk with me. If it goes well, this site will be removed. If he attempts to close me down and not address the concerns in a real way, this site will be back up shortly.

    Love to all.”

*Note - please do not drown the puppies when the Hill$ong pastor closes you down and doesn’t address your concerns in a real way.

I accept your apology Abtruth & deliver one in return for any over-reaction.

There are worse things to be than someone who attacks weak-thinking. Being dispassionate or apathetic/opinion-neutral for one thing. No one on this blog will ever be accused of that.

    ;o)

I don’t know Reve… not sure I agree with that… Or do I? I think the best thing would be to be totally neutral on the subject.

Has it ever been alleged that Hillsong is cruel to puppies? Cute, innocent puppies that never hurt anyone?

Emanresu, you are guilty of unholy fence-sitting & shall thus be cast asunder!

Until that is, ……we consume toxic liquor & gourmet pizas on Sunday!

I’ll be the guy with the shirt, pants & nose & lips.

Me guilty!? Look who’s talking! I mean, thanks for the “double blessing” and all, but it doesn’t really reiterate your point. You and your crazy ecclesiastical doctrine. I will also be wearing my lips on Sunday… the bottom one will have a ring through it.

Please remove for the consumption of food for hygeine reasons. Please replace after meal so that one of us can lead your sorry drunken behind to a taxi afterwards!

    Heh Heh

    You bringing your gf?

  11. 161
    emanresu Says:

Um… I actually plan on driving.. .it’s the Australian way!
I would bring my girlfriend, but she’s working… also, when I told her that I was going to a lunch with people that I converse with on a blog, she couldn’t stop laughing =(
4 times in the last 24 hours she’s looked and me seductively and said “Enjoy your blog lunch”. Then she suggests that I bring my laptop.
The ring will stay in at all time… not because I’m opposed to hygiene, but because it’s an absolute bitch to put in and out.

Blog Lunch! Ha! She sounds like she has a great sense of humour! Isn’t it nice when we can be such a source of amusement to the significant ones in our lives? A difficult yet rewarding calling…

Make sure your mate Emblazoned dose’nt pike despite all the pressure he’s under, it won’t be “heavy”, just a bunch of new friends sitting around in the sun admiring the view, drink in one hand, something to chomp in the other - & alot of shared laughter that can only result through the recognition of shared & similar life-stories.

  13. 163
    emanresu Says:

No, I’m funnier… I tell her that all the time. She’s always laughing AT me.
I’m sure Emblazoned’s read this thread and is well aware about this Sunday. I dont’ want to be the only 23 year old. =)

Heh Heh, well i hate to say it my brother, but…..what did hanging out with people exactly the same age as you ever do for you? Except make you feel…ermmm….”cool?”.

We’ll try to tone down the big words & grown-up talk, we promise. And if you get bored just tug on my trouser leg & i’ll find you a TV & plonk you in front of it.

    All jokes

Central Coast people aren’t welcome on the Northern Beaches… we’re not running a bloody daiye spa!
Reve… that just goes to show how old you are… no one watches TV these days, put me in front of a computer with a wireless internet connection. Geez!

    Reve Says:

I have to be up at Niagara Park by 2pm anyone going to be there around 12?

  21. 171
    Lance Says:

I thought I’d leave it until the last minute before deciding whether to pop in to the Newport Arms (since it’s only just around the corner from Perth) ..and I probably would have if it had been next Sunday and I was a bit more relaxed.

But I feel I need to take a break from everything (including Signposts related matters)…so I’m planning on spending the next few days in some exotic location in WA like Lockridge or the scenic White Gum Valley.

Have a pub burger for me.

  22. 172
    Reve Says:

Greg, yes i will be there from midday & most likely Smithus, too. You can help us mind the table.

Lance, i am very sorry we will miss the opportunity to see you in the flesh but i (we) hope you can have give yourself a really relaxing time off.

May I divert this thread? I have just watched the ABC’s Lateline program re: Mr John Howard and Mr Kevin Rudd ‘marketing’ their political wares with a christian ’spin’ to christians across the land, by the invitation of the Christian Lobby. Oh look, whats that in the sky, is it a political rally, is it a prosperity doctrine vs social justice debate…no! It’s a HS service!!…yawn….
I am disturbed quite frankly - separation of powers…..now in case you didn’t read that correctly I will repeat myself again.. SEPARATION of powers. I am sure there was probably a very good reason this happened at some point in history……
The parable of the talents indeed……I think I will exercise my ‘talent’ for independant thought and cast a vote outside of the 2 major political parties after that effort. And I do not mean the we can not articulate our policies coherently, Family First Party. I am a christian but I dislike intensely being demographically pigeon holed. The oh so your a christian so you must think…….oh so your a christian so this and that must be important to you……oh so your a christian so you dont know when your being manipulated……
One size fits all christianity, grrrrrrr. One size fits all christianity, it’s so 4 years ago…….

    having a bad week Daisy?

So you’re going to vote a particular way just so you don’t vote the way you think they want you to? Wow. Now that’s a responsible use of democracy.

  28. 178
    daisy Says:

Thanks for caring turtleneck, but my week has been very productive.
Just a bad viewing experience, I think I was fairly specific, oh well. It is a responsible use of my ability to choose and be critically anaytical about how ‘democracy’ is being expressed within a context. I am going to keep in mind my christianity is being marketed to and being given political ‘meaning’. Meaning that is being equated to a set of political values or worldview I may or may not share.

    wakey74 Says:

    Daisy,

I went last night to watch what was said by Howard and Rudd. I must admit I didn’t get too much out of it, it was as I expected it to be. They both said all the things they knew their audience wanted to hear, nothing earthshattering in it. Although we missed a lot of what Howard said as the webcast stopped working. Maybe that was lucky.

After the last election with the emergence of family first and the “christian vote” it is no surprise that they both attended last night and want to be seen as listening to them.

What did strike me was the biggest applause last night was when Howard said that political correctness had gone too far with nativity scenes being banned in stores.
