Nobody shall know the hour or the day
…except us, that is.
We have both really enjoyed reading the comments in the thread announcing our impending shut down. Some of your comments have been very touching and have affirmed some of what we have been trying (albeit clumsily) to accomplish with this little old site. We see that a new site has started and some have chosen to migrate for future content. We won’t have anything to do with that site or its content, so people can put someone else’s email address on their speed dial. So just wanting to let you all know that we think that the beginning of Spring is a good time to start getting on with something else.
So this site will shut down on 1 September 2007. On that date we will post a couple of posts, which will remain on the front page of this site for the immediate future, but comments will (probably) be turned off. The first is a chance for us to acknowledge some of the many people who have helped us out with this site behind the scenes. Many people have helped us with a whole range of things and we would like to acknowledge them. Secondly, we want to post a bit of a reflection on the experience of running this site, including some of the offline friction that this has caused.
Anyway, if you want to say your goodbyes, do so in this thread because in less than a week comments will be turned off. Otherwise head over to signposts2 (which may possibly become known as the blog with the greatest and most amusing array of sub-titles ever) and get stuck into Lance.

This kind of reminds me in a scene from th emovie “Titanic” where the old couple are laying in their stateroom as water comes into the sinking ship and they go down to a watery grave together.

Closing on September 11 would have a nice ring to it (overtones of cataclysm)… but September 1 might just have to do.

It really is a wonder that Signposts survived this long at all. Its quality pales in comparison to some other blogs which get much less attention, such as http://neapolitan500.blogspot.com , just to pick one at random.

any bets on how long it is until Lance is jailed for offending someone on SP2? As “they” say … the foot is on the other shoe, now.
August 28th, 2007 at 10:07 am
You get jailed for offending people on the interwebs now? Seems like we decided to finish up here just in time…
August 28th, 2007 at 10:25 am
Lance is well aware of defamation laws.
“Your Honour, no reasonable person would think when I called pastor X ‘a deplorable example of toxic low life pond scum’ it was anything other than parody.”

actually I really liked the drawings on Joe’s blog - worth going over for a look

Joseph is cool, Joseph is talented, Joseph’s blog is better than signposts.
Hmmphs.

So when signposts shuts down and comments are turned off will we still be able to access old strings..?
August 29th, 2007 at 9:14 am
For a while at least. We are still thinking about how long we are going to keep the content up.

thank you to all those who challenged my thinking.. iron certainly sharpens iron and though we may not have changed our minds one bit I am sure we have clarified our own thoughts greatly which is a good thing.

Seems like everybody already left. This is as anti-climatic as the last episode of Seinfeld. Haha butcher, I got the last word.

This has been a rewrading couple of years. As a melancholy, I’ve been in the deepest depths of confusion and despair. This site has helped me work through the puzzle that is the Contemporary Church Business model.
In this exploration we have found that many contemporary Churches are actually family controlled event marketing businesses that place their survival and the affluent livelihoods of the Senior Pastors above Truth and people.
I guess, for me too its time move on too*.
First, I just want to say a few goodbyes …
AbTruth: A brother in arms. I have admired your courage since you posted the first heartfelt plea on Phil Bakers Blog asking him to step up against the corruption in the Contemporary Church. Unfortunately we were both disappointed – when there was no response.
Lance – what can I say you challenged my worldview, and whilst I still see homosexuality as sinful, I have learned not to place it above other things that I am guilty of. Greed, selfishness, pride, other stuff too personal to publish here etc. I am as sinful and as redeemed as the repentant homosexual …
Rev – I still see your poverty theology as not being ‘technically correct’ but my heart tells me that you, like St Francis of Assisi are following Jesus with more commitment than I could ever do. I admire your faithfulness. If at the end of it all, my reliance upon Grace is not enough – then put a good word in for me.
Jane – Thanks for your friendship, and all the information that you have shared. You brought clarity and sanity to me when I was processing so much …
Phil and Dan – Thanks for having the courage to host this site. This forum has been a benefit to so many. As Bill Gates stated – “the Internet Changes everything”. People in the silent minority can no longer be quarantined and contained and can form a vocal majority in their own right.
Saint – for your insight and you research abilities. You blog has been an invaluable reference tool.
The Contemporary Church ‘Insiders’ – people who would email me with encouragement, stories and information. Oftimes requesting that issues be raised for public discussion. Some would just email to say things like “I have stopped tithing ‘because I don’t know where the money goes”
Dr Russell Kelly for diligently taking the time to dissect to dodgy Tithing doctrines of Paul de Jong, Allan Meyer and Brian Houston.
Emblazoned: A guys after my own heart. A melancholy with the courage to go after Truth, seek answers directly from Hillsong and be honest about what he found. As much as it hurts, Truth has set you free.
Everyone else, Bec, emanresu, Wiggy, IfIknewthen, Daisy, Reve, GregTheExplorer, Zulu, the soothing comments of Janet, Janet M you guys have made the conversations what they are. Frank open honest and interesting. AKevin you persistent prodding and wry sense of humour will be missed. Facelift, I rarely agree with you – but atleast you have the courage to put your views forward. Homer, making Lances neck hairs stand on end.
And also thanks to both Graeme Mcfadden and SilentBob for making our case plain.
* To Signposts2 - Semper reformata!
